On the evening of April 29, 2021, a dispute in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx escalated into a fatal act of violence that claimed the life of 32-year-old Ramel Moore. At approximately 9:20 p.m., in front of an apartment building at 1229 Franklin Avenue, Moore was shot multiple times in the torso. The gunshots followed what sources familiar with the investigation described as a dispute with another man.
Responding officers from the 42nd Precinct discovered Moore unconscious and
unresponsive at the scene. Emergency medical services rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead a short time later. The initial investigation began with detectives seeking to understand the motive behind the shooting, but no immediate arrests were made.
The investigation into Ramel Moore's death led to the arrest of Quron Thomas, 33, on May 20, 2021. According to the facts presented at trial, Thomas had argued with Moore on April 21, 2021. On the night of the shooting, at around 9:15 p.m., Thomas returned to the location with an accomplice who has not been apprehended and shot Moore three times.
Video surveillance played a crucial role in the case, capturing the shooting and tracking Thomas back to his residence. The footage also showed that Thomas had changed his clothing before and after the incident. An eyewitness also identified Thomas as the shooter. On November 12, 2024, a jury found Quron Thomas guilty of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Subsequently, on January 30, 2025, a Bronx Supreme Court Justice sentenced Thomas to 21 years to life in prison for the murder charge, with the sentences for the weapon charges to run concurrently.
