In the early hours of May 29, 2021, a tragic incident unfolded inside a Crown Heights, Brooklyn apartment that would ultimately claim the life of 22-year-old Hakeem Norman. Norman, a male resident of the Pacific Street apartment, was with his friend, 18-year-old Reynaldo Lewis, whom he had allowed to move in about two months prior. While Lewis was reportedly toying with a firearm, it discharged, striking Norman in the neck.
Following the shooting, Lewis initially fled the scene but later
called 911 to report that his roommate had been shot. He also contacted a neighbor, and during a subsequent conversation with a police officer, allegedly admitted to accidentally shooting Norman and inquired about his condition. Emergency services transported Norman to Interfaith Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later on May 31, 2021.
Law enforcement officials began a search for the suspect, releasing photos to the public. After initially hesitating, Reynaldo Lewis eventually turned himself in to the authorities, accompanied by a relative. He was subsequently arrested on June 21, 2021, and charged with manslaughter.
During his arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court, Lewis's defense attorney argued that the shooting was a tragic accident, asserting that Lewis believed the weapon was a BB gun. The defense portrayed Lewis as remorseful and suggested he needed therapy rather than incarceration. However, Norman's mother, Natalie Townsend, expressed her belief that the shooting was not accidental, stating that the gun had reportedly jammed twice before the fatal shot was fired. A judge ordered Lewis to be held on $100,000 bail.
