In the late hours of the Fourth of July in 2022, a burst of violence inside an East New York bodega shattered the holiday calm, leaving two men dead and another critically wounded. One of the victims was 21-year-old Sulaiman Odunsa, a resident of the Brooklyn neighborhood who lived just a short distance from the Loring Avenue deli where his life was tragically cut short.
Around 11:30 p.m., gunfire erupted within the confines of the store.
When police from the 75th Precinct arrived, they discovered a chaotic and bloody scene. Odunsa had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man, 23-year-old Amir Green, was found with a gunshot wound to his neck and was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. An 18-year-old man was also shot in the torso and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Less than 24 hours after the deadly shooting, the New York Police Department made an arrest in connection with the case. Malachi Kirkland, a 19-year-old who lived less than a mile from the bodega, was taken into custody on the afternoon of July 5th. He was subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder. Law enforcement officials have stated their belief that the shooting was motivated by gang-related activities. Investigators at the scene recovered three firearms that were allegedly used during the incident.
