In the early moments of a Tuesday morning in Brooklyn, the life of 19-year-old Javon Craig was tragically cut short. Just after midnight on March 7, 2017, police responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire at the Risley Dent Towers complex on Fulton Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered Craig, a male resident of nearby Halsey Street, unconscious and unresponsive on the first floor.
He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear to investigators. Authorities reported that an aunt of Craig's lived in the building where he was found. As of the initial reports, the police had not made any arrests in connection with the homicide, and the investigation remained ongoing. Nearly eight years prior, in 2009, Javon Craig's older brother, Rasheed, was also shot and killed in the lobby of the very same building. That case, too, remained unsolved, compounding the family's grief and loss. The violent deaths of two sons in the same location left a profound and devastating impact on their mother and their surviving brother.
