A festive baby shower on a cold December night in Brooklyn turned into a scene of tragedy, marking the violent end to the life of 39-year-old Hilario Paulino Cortez Vidals. The Hispanic male was attending the celebration at the Afrika House Banquet Hall on Bedford Avenue on December 31, 2016. What should have been a joyous occasion soured as a long-simmering feud between two families erupted.
The conflict reportedly began with an argument involving Cortez Vidals' teenage son and another
person at the party. This dispute escalated, leading to a grim conclusion in the early hours of the morning. Around 1:30 a.m., a man who had been at the gathering allegedly returned and fired a single, fatal shot from outside the venue. The bullet pierced a window and struck Cortez Vidals in the head.
Pandemonium ensued as the joyful atmosphere of the baby shower was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Amid the chaos, the shooter fled the scene. Emergency services were called, and Cortez Vidals was rushed to Kings County Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police began an investigation into what they described as a deep-seated, "Hatfield-McCoy" style feud between the two families. Detectives questioned numerous witnesses who were present at the banquet hall, hoping to identify the person responsible for the senseless act of violence. However, despite their efforts, the gunman remained at large. The case left a family grieving a profound loss at the close of the year, with the perpetrator yet to be brought to justice.
