On a rainy Palm Sunday, April 15, 1984, a horrific scene was discovered inside a Brooklyn, New York apartment that would later be known as the "Palm Sunday Massacre". Among the ten individuals who lost their lives was a 14-year-old Hispanic female named Migdalia Perez. The victims, two women, two teenage girls, and six children, were found in relaxed positions on couches and chairs, suggesting they were taken by surprise.
In total, nineteen bullets were fired from two different handguns at close range, with most of the victims being shot in the head.
The motive for this brutal act was determined to be jealousy. The perpetrator, Christopher Thomas, suspected his wife of having an affair with Enrique Bermudez, the owner of the apartment and a convicted cocaine dealer. Thomas's wife testified that her husband was "enraged" when he found her at Bermudez's residence without him. The other victims of the massacre were Virginia Lopez, 24, and her two sons, 4-year-old Juan and 7-year-old Eddie. Also killed were Migdalia's sister, Carmen Perez, 20, who was pregnant at the time, and her two young sons, 5-year-old Alberto and 3-year-old Noel. The other children who died were 14-year-old Betsy Bermudez, her 10-year-old sister Marilyn, and another 10-year-old girl named Maria Isabel Perez. The sole survivor of the tragedy was Carmen Perez's infant daughter, Christina.
In 1985, Christopher Thomas was brought to justice for his crimes. However, he was convicted of ten counts of manslaughter rather than murder. The jury had initially convicted him of intentional murder, but the charges were reduced due to his claim of being under "extreme emotional disturbance" and high on drugs at the time of the killings. Thomas was sentenced to a lengthy prison term but was released in 2018 after serving 32 years.
