In a tragic act of violence that cut a young life short, 21-year-old Shamar Davis was fatally shot in Brooklyn, New York, on the evening of Monday, April 13, 2020. Davis, a Black male, was killed after he had stepped in to break up a fight between his sister and another woman.
The initial dispute, described as a 'girl fight' by his aunt, took place earlier in the day at the Tilden Houses in the Brownsville neighborhood.
Hours later, in an apparent act of retaliation for his intervention, a gunman laid in wait for Davis. As he was attempting to enter his family's 13th-floor apartment at approximately 9:25 p.m., the assailant ambushed him in the hallway, shooting him multiple times. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, returning from a shopping trip, heard the gunshots and arrived to find her son deceased just outside their front door.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the New York Police Department apprehended a suspect. Tejion Lee, a 25-year-old from the Bronx, was found hiding in another apartment within the same building along with several other individuals. Authorities were able to recover the murder weapon, which had reportedly been thrown out of an apartment window. Lee was arrested and subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Family members described Shamar Davis as a caring individual who had been looking after his aunt, who suffered from respiratory issues, during the COVID-19 lockdown. He had previously attended Monroe College and was planning to return to his studies. The case against Tejion Lee is proceeding through the legal system.
