On a cold January evening in Brooklyn, 15-year-old Javel Lawton, a male student at the Canarsie Educational Campus, was fatally shot. The incident occurred on January 2, 2024, outside the Bayview Houses in Canarsie, a neighborhood he had previously called home. He was found with a gunshot wound to his torso and was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Javel, who was born on March 19, 2008, was reportedly visiting friends at the NYCHA complex shortly
before the fatal encounter. As he was leaving one of the buildings alone, he was approached by a group of four to five males. An argument ensued between Javel and the group. During the confrontation, one of the individuals, described as wearing light blue clothing, allegedly pulled out a pistol. It is believed that Javel also produced a firearm. The instigator fired approximately five shots, striking Javel, who managed to fire a single shot in return before he was fatally wounded.
Detectives are investigating the possibility that the shooting was gang-related, with the suspects potentially being affiliated with a subset of the Bloods gang known as APES. The individual in the light blue clothing is thought to possibly have ties to the Crips gang. However, police have not confirmed whether Javel himself was affiliated with any gang. The suspects, who were wearing hoods, masks, and gloves, fled the scene and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to search for the individuals responsible for Javel Lawton's death.
Family and friends remember Javel as a charismatic and helpful young man who dreamed of a future in real estate. He was the youngest son in a large family and was described as a 'mama's and daddy's boy.' His death, the first fatal shooting in Brooklyn in 2024, prompted an outcry from the community, with residents and anti-gun violence groups gathering to call for more funding and resources to prevent further tragedies.
