On a Sunday afternoon in Fairmont, West Virginia, the lives of two men from Detroit, Michigan, came to a violent end. Jemiez Weathersby, a 31-year-old Black / African American man, and Earnest Cole Jr., 21, were found deceased on March 19, 2017, inside an apartment on Satterfield Street. The discovery was made at approximately 4:15 p.m., and the scene that confronted law enforcement was grim.
Investigators determined that both Weathersby and Cole had been shot multiple times in the head.
The Fairmont Police Chief characterized the killings as an "execution" and immediately classified the case as a double homicide. Evidence of drug manufacturing was also discovered within the apartment, leading authorities to believe the murders were a targeted event and not a random act of violence.
In the wake of the killings, the police sought to reassure the public by stating their belief that the suspects were not from the local area and that the community was not in any immediate danger. Despite the targeted nature of the crime and the evidence found at the scene, the investigation has not led to any arrests. The Fairmont Police Department issued a plea to the public for any information related to suspicious activity on Satterfield Street on the day of the murders.
