In the spring of 2014, tragedy struck a Louisville, Kentucky family not once, but twice, in the same troubled housing complex. John L. Hebert, a 28-year-old male, lost his life to gunfire on April 29th at the Beecher Terrace apartments. His violent death was cruelly echoed by the fact that his own brother had been shot and killed in the very same location only weeks prior, compounding the grief for their mother, who was left to mourn the loss of two sons in such a short and brutal span of

It was believed that Hebert and another man, 26-year-old Dwight Patterson Jr., had engaged in a shootout, ultimately killing one another in the altercation which was rumored to have erupted over a dice game. The scene outside the apartment complex in the 1100 block of Fisk Court was one of chaos and sorrow, a testament to the ongoing violence that plagued the community and had now claimed two members of the same family.
The narrative of a simple, albeit tragic, case of mutual combat took a turn, however, when the investigation delved deeper into the events of that fatal day. In a significant development, a grand jury handed down an indictment against a man named Leroy Morris in connection with John Hebert's death. The charges brought against Morris were serious, including murder and wanton endangerment, suggesting that the initial belief that the two men had solely been responsible for each other's demise was not the full story.
