On the evening of September 18, 2021, a tragic event unfolded in a Bronx apartment building that ended the life of 26-year-old Wayne Leon. The incident, which began as an apparent robbery attempt, escalated into a fatal shooting inside his residence at 3400 Wickham Avenue. That night, Leon was spending time with his girlfriend and brother. When his brother stepped out to dispose of the trash, three men reportedly entered the fourth-floor apartment.
A confrontation ensued, and in the
midst of the attempted robbery, one of the intruders discharged a firearm, striking Leon in the shoulder. The assailants then fled the scene. Responding to a 911 call about an assault at approximately 10:35 p.m., police officers found Leon unconscious and unresponsive in the hallway of the building. Emergency medical services rushed him to Jacobi Hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.
The New York Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, which soon led to arrests. On September 22, 2021, authorities took 30-year-old David Mattison into custody. He was charged with a slate of serious offenses including murder, manslaughter, attempted robbery, assault, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon. A second suspect, 27-year-old Cintron Powell, was apprehended on October 12, 2021. Powell faced an identical set of charges: murder, manslaughter, assault, burglary, criminal possession of a firearm, and two counts of attempted robbery for his alleged role in the death of Wayne Leon.
