In the winter of 2013, a family dispute in Northeast Washington, D.C. turned tragic, leading to the death of 53-year-old Emanuel Campbell. On the evening of January 17th, police and emergency services responded to a call in the 2000 block of Maryland Avenue, NE, where they found an unconscious man bleeding from an apparent head injury. Emanuel was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, where he was admitted in critical condition.
For two weeks, he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on January 31, 2013. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined that his death was a homicide caused by blunt force trauma.
The investigation into Emanuel's death soon focused on a suspect close to home: his own grandson, 23-year-old Davon Thomas. According to police, the fatal incident began with a confrontation between Emanuel and his grandson over visitors that Thomas had brought to the family's apartment. The argument escalated, and at one point, Emanuel was pushed and fell, striking his head. Five days after his grandfather's death, Davon Thomas was arrested in connection with the incident.
Initially indicted on a charge of second-degree murder, to which he pleaded innocent, Davon Thomas later accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. In May of the following year, a judge sentenced him to four years in prison for his role in the death of his grandfather, Emanuel Campbell. The sentencing brought a close to the legal proceedings surrounding the untimely and tragic death that stemmed from a family altercation.
