In the summer evening of July 26, 2023, 30-year-old Arnold Humberto Solis was watching a soccer match in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. He was among approximately 70 people at the field of Marie Reed Elementary School, enjoying the game. Earlier that evening, he had been seen with an acquaintance, 33-year-old Pedro Antonio Funes, purchasing food and beer.
Witnesses later told police that the two men appeared to be friends and that they did not see any argument or altercation between them as they sat together watching the game.
The seemingly peaceful evening was shattered at approximately 8:24 p.m. In a shocking turn of events, Funes allegedly produced a pistol, placed it against Solis's face, and shot him in the head. After the shooting, Funes is said to have calmly walked away from the scene. First responders arrived to find Solis with no signs of life, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
While witnesses at the soccer field did not report seeing a dispute, acting D.C. police chief Pamela A. Smith stated that authorities believed a dispute had occurred between the two men. Further investigation revealed that less than 30 minutes before the fatal shooting, Solis and Funes were captured on video arguing outside a nearby liquor store. Court documents allege that during this argument, Funes threatened Solis, saying, 'the next time you say that sh*t I'm going to make sure you leak out of your f*cking brain.”
On September 6, 2023, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Pedro Funes. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. Funes was ordered detained by a D.C. Superior Court judge. In May 2024, it was reported that Funes had rejected a plea deal that would have required him to plead guilty to second-degree murder while armed.
