In the midst of a snowstorm on January 23, 2000, Derrick Thomas, a 33-year-old male, was driving his Chevrolet Suburban on Interstate 435 in Kansas City, Missouri. He and two friends were on their way to the airport to catch a flight to St. Louis to watch the NFC Championship game. Police reports indicated that he was speeding, weaving through traffic on the increasingly icy roads. He lost control of the vehicle, which then went into the median and rolled over multiple times.
