In the late afternoon of May 15, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast, in Washington, D.C. When the chaos subsided, 28-year-old Lester Howard, a Black male from Southeast, D.C., lay fatally wounded. Responding officers and emergency medical services arrived at the scene around 4:55 pm to find a tragic scene.
Howard, along with two women, had all sustained gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate medical attention, Howard’s injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The two women were transported to local hospitals and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth victim, another adult male, later sought treatment at a hospital for a gunshot wound sustained in the same incident. The shooting was not a simple act of violence but a mass shooting that left one man dead and three others injured. In the days and months that followed, a street memorial was created for Howard, where friends maintained a daily vigil.
The investigation into Howard's murder led D.C. police to identify a suspect. On September 14, 2021, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 31-year-old Juan Peterson of Northeast, D.C. Peterson was charged with first-degree murder while armed. The investigation suggested that Peterson was not the person who fired the shots but had allegedly aided and abetted the shooter. According to court documents, Peterson's alleged role was that of the getaway driver, and he was also accused of providing the firearm to the shooter, who remains unidentified.
Juan Peterson's trial for his alleged involvement in the mass shooting began, with surviving victims testifying to the persistent fear and anxiety they have experienced since the incident. The prosecution argued that Peterson was a willing participant, stating he knew the 'trigger man' and followed the plan to arrive, provide the weapon, and drive the shooter away from the scene. Peterson's defense attorney countered that his client feared the shooter and only participated out of fear for his own life. As the legal proceedings continue, the case remains an active investigation while police continue to search for the unidentified shooter.
