On the evening of Saturday, October 20, 1990, John Patrick Winston, a 63-year-old Caucasian male, was fatally shot in what appeared to be an attempted robbery. The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m. in the driveway of his home on Chevy Chase Circle in Northwest Washington, D.C. Winston, an attorney for the National Automobile Dealers Association, had just returned from a theater production with his wife and mother-in-law. He remained in the car for a few moments to listen to liturgical music, a passion of his, while the two women went inside the house.
Shortly after entering the home, his wife, Jeanni, became concerned when he did not follow. She then heard noises, which were followed by gunshots. Rushing back outside, she and her mother-in-law discovered Winston in the driveway with gunshot wounds to his head and chest. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene, but the assailant had already fled. Police have not confirmed if any items were taken from Winston, and his wife stated that he would not have resisted his attacker.
The investigation into John Patrick Winston's murder remains open and unsolved, with no suspects identified. In the days following his death, the National Automobile Dealers Association announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. The Metropolitan Police Department continues to seek assistance from the public, offering a reward of up to $25,000. Friends and family described Winston as a deeply compassionate and devout man, actively involved in his church, Blessed Sacrament, and dedicated to helping the homeless. A relative recounted that just before arriving home on the night he was killed, Winston had given his last dollar to a person on the street.
