Tyrone Hopkins Jr., a 30-year-old Black man from Northeast Washington, D.C., was killed late on Sunday, April 30, 2023. At approximately 11:48 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department Sixth District officers were sent to the 3800 block of Jay Street NE after receiving a report of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found Hopkins suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded, but he showed no signs of life and could not be saved.
His body remained at the scene until it was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The shooting unfolded during a violent period in the city and left investigators searching for the people responsible. Police did not publicly describe a dispute, confrontation, robbery, or other event that may have led to the gunfire.
