A night out in Washington, D.C.’s vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood ended in tragedy in the early hours of Sunday, October 18, 2026, when gunfire erupted, claiming the life of Ronnie Amarion Massey. The 22-year-old man from Fairfax, Virginia, was killed just miles from his home, leaving a family to grieve a sudden and violent loss.

The fatal incident unfolded shortly before 3 a.m. along a busy commercial stretch of Connecticut Avenue. At approximately 2:52 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers from the Second District were dispatched to the 1300 block of Connecticut Avenue NW after receiving reports of a shooting. The area, typically filled with people enjoying its many restaurants, shops, and nightlife, became a crime scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Ronnie was found unconscious and not breathing. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and immediately attempted life-saving measures, but his injuries proved too severe. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, an adult female, was found conscious and breathing. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of what authorities described as non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not publicly released the woman's identity or commented on her relationship to Ronnie. The burst of gunfire also shattered a window at the nearby Tatte Bakery, which was closed and unoccupied at the time. No other injuries were reported.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch is leading the investigation into Ronnie’s death. Investigators have not yet identified a suspect or publicly established a motive for the deadly shooting. Some initial reports from the scene were conflicting; while the official police statement confirmed two victims, some early news accounts mentioned a possible third victim, a second male with non-life-threatening injuries. Police later clarified that only Ronnie and the female victim were found shot at the scene. One report mentioned that police were looking for a suspect described only as a man wearing "dark-colored clothing."

Public records from 2021 indicate that a 17-year-old also named Ronnie Amarion Massey, from Fairfax, was sought by Prince William County police in connection with a fatal shooting in Dumfries, Virginia. On August 12, 2021, a 15-year-old boy was shot at a home and died from his injuries days later. Following the victim's death, police obtained an involuntary manslaughter charge for Massey and received court authorization to release his name and photo to the public. The outcome of that case is not publicly known, and authorities have not stated whether it has any connection to Ronnie's death in Washington, D.C.

As of October 2026, the investigation into Ronnie's homicide remains open and active, with no arrests announced. The shooting was one of at least two separate incidents that occurred in Northwest D.C. that night, though police have stated there is no evidence connecting them.

The Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting on Connecticut Avenue to come forward. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with knowledge of this incident is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or send a message to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
