On a Sunday evening in Washington, D.C., a violent burst of gunfire erupted, shattering the peace and leaving two men dead. One of the victims was Othaniel Gaither, a 34-year-old Black man from Southeast D.C. The incident unfolded on March 12, 2023, when a vehicle carrying Gaither and two other men was relentlessly pursued and fired upon.
The chase and shooting spanned several blocks, beginning on 11th Street SE and continuing from M Street to Pennsylvania Avenue before the targeted SUV
crashed in the 500 block of 11th Street, SE. Inside the vehicle, authorities found Gaither and another man, Hamza Halaoh, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. A third individual in the SUV was also shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was able to cooperate with investigators.
Police believe the shooting was not a random act of violence and that at least one of the occupants of the SUV was targeted. Investigators recovered one firearm from the scene, but there was no evidence to suggest an exchange of gunfire between the two vehicles. The suspects, believed to be in another vehicle, fled the scene and have not been publicly identified.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicides of Othaniel Gaither and Hamza Halaoh. The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the double homicide and has offered a substantial reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek assistance from the public to bring those responsible to justice.
