In the late afternoon of January 31, 2024, the life of 30-year-old Nicorie Adams, a male resident of Springfield, Massachusetts, was tragically cut short. Gunfire erupted around 4:20 p.m., prompting a ShotSpotter alert on Rochelle Street. As Springfield police officers were responding to that notification, a second alert directed them to nearby Braddock Street.
At both locations, investigators discovered evidence of a shooting, but found no victims.
The chaotic scene soon shifted to Baystate Medical Center, where Adams and a woman arrived in a vehicle. Adams was suffering from a serious gunshot wound, and though medical personnel fought to save him, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The female passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the shooting death of Nicorie Adams led authorities to identify a suspect. On February 29, 2024, Jermaine Atkins, a 36-year-old man from Westfield, was apprehended in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Springfield police had tracked him to the southern state and local officers, acting on that information, took him into custody on a fugitive from justice warrant. Atkins is accused of being the individual who shot both Adams and the woman. The Springfield Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
