On a cold January evening in Washington, D.C., a young man's life was tragically cut short. Twenty-year-old Marquette White was shot and killed on Friday, January 21, 2022. The fatal encounter took place at approximately 8:36 p.m. in the 3800 block of Commodore Joshua Barney Drive, Northeast. When officers from the Fifth District of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found White suffering from gunshot wounds.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported him to a local hospital, but despite their life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the Northeast D.C. man led detectives to identify two suspects. On April 28, 2022, 19-year-old Maurice Williams, Jr. and 18-year-old Seaun McDowney were apprehended in Atlanta, Georgia. The two, both of no fixed address, were wanted on a warrant for First Degree Murder While Armed. Following their arrest, they began the extradition process to be returned to Washington, D.C. to face the charges against them.
As the case proceeded through the legal system, more details about the night of Marquette White's death emerged. Prosecutors stated that Williams and McDowney had planned to rob White of his gun. On the night of the incident, McDowney was reportedly with Williams, who prosecutors identified as the shooter. It was alleged that McDowney watched as Williams dragged White from a vehicle and shot him in the chest. Following the shooting, both Williams and McDowney fled to Georgia, where they were eventually captured. In August 2024, Seaun McDowney accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. In exchange, the other charges against him were dismissed. As part of the agreement, he faced a stipulated sentence of 13 to 16 years of incarceration.
