In the early morning hours of July 7, 2020, violence shattered the quiet of a Washington, D.C. neighborhood. Responding to the sound of gunshots on Bass Place in Southeast D.C., police arrived to a grim scene around 1:15 a.m. Inside a vehicle, they discovered a man and a woman who had been shot. Nearby, another man was found, also suffering from gunshot wounds. All three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the victims was identified as 20-year-old Juwan Wade, a Black male from Northeast D.C. The other victims were 56-year-old Claudette Williams and 29-year-old Marquise Lewis.
The Metropolitan Police Department began an investigation into the triple homicide. Their efforts led to the identification of two suspects. On October 20, 2020, 33-year-old Dale Benjamin was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed. Several months later, on February 24, 2021, a second suspect, 44-year-old Jibri Qayyum, was also apprehended and faced the same charges. It seemed as though the case was moving toward a resolution for the families of the victims.
However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn. In April 2021, a D.C. Superior Court judge dismissed the murder charges against both Dale Benjamin and Jibri Qayyum. The dismissal followed a preliminary hearing where new evidence was presented. A surveillance video reportedly showed a muzzle flash originating from the victims' vehicle, raising questions about who initiated the shooting. While the ruling allows for the possibility of charges being refiled if more evidence comes to light, the case remains unresolved, leaving the deaths of Juwan Wade, Claudette Williams, and Marquise Lewis without a definitive legal conclusion. The investigation is ongoing.
