In the early hours of Friday, March 24, 2023, the sounds of gunshots pierced the quiet of the 4400 block of E Street, Southeast in Washington, D.C. When Sixth District officers arrived at the scene around 12:25 a.m., they discovered evidence of a shooting, but no victim was to be found. A short time later, another call led police to the 300 block of Anacostia Drive, Southeast, where they found an unconscious adult male suffering from gunshot wounds.
The man was identified as 24-year-old
Stephon Carroll of Southeast, DC. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the Anacostia Drive location and, after finding no signs of life, Carroll was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department later determined that Carroll had been shot on E Street before he was found on Anacostia Drive.
The tragedy surrounding Stephon Carroll's death was compounded weeks later. On April 11, 2023, a shooting erupted outside the funeral home where his services were being held, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to three others. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III stated that it appeared several individuals at the funeral were specifically targeted.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with Stephon Carroll's murder. The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the homicide and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. Authorities have not released any information about a potential suspect or suspects in the case.
