In the late morning of a summer day in Washington, D.C., a dispute over a pair of shoes escalated into a fatal encounter. On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, 30-year-old Israel Mattocks, a shoe reseller, was shot and killed in the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast. The incident occurred at approximately 11:44 a.m. in the East River Park Shopping Center, just outside a Shoe City store.
Earlier that morning, Mattocks had asked another man, Darius Anderson, for assistance in purchasing
shoes from the store. When Anderson was unsuccessful, a brief argument ensued between the two men. They parted ways but encountered each other again shortly after at a nearby Downtown Locker Room, where they had another disagreement. Following this, Mattocks returned to Shoe City. Anderson, however, went to his residence before returning to the shopping center, where he waited for Mattocks. As Mattocks exited the shoe store, Anderson opened fire, striking him multiple times.
Responding officers found Israel Mattocks with apparent gunshot wounds. Despite the arrival of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, he showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy later revealed that Mattocks had sustained at least six gunshot wounds to his arms, chest, and neck. Police recovered a weapon at the scene of the shooting.
Less than a month later, on Monday, July 11, 2022, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 21-year-old Darius Anderson of Northeast, D.C. He was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed. In September 2024, a jury found Anderson guilty of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license. During the trial, the prosecution argued that Mattocks was 'ambushed,' while the defense claimed Anderson acted in self-defense, believing Mattocks was reaching for a weapon. Anderson was later sentenced for his role in the death of Israel Mattocks.
