In the autumn of 2022, the lives of two teenage friends were tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Southeast Washington, D.C. Reginald Cooper Jr., a 19-year-old Black male, and his childhood friend, Davonte Berkley, also 19, were fatally shot on the evening of October 17th. The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. in an apartment building on Congress Street SE, a place Cooper's family said he didn't typically frequent. A third individual was also wounded in the attack but survived.
The Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of the shooting and found Cooper deceased at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Berkley was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. The mothers of both young men, who were residents of District Heights, Maryland, were left heartbroken and searching for answers as to why their sons were targeted.
Childhood friends who had played football together, Cooper and Berkley were described as inseparable. On the day of the shooting, they had finished their shift at Restaurant Depot and made their way into the city. According to investigators, they drove to the Congress Street apartment building where they were met by a young man who greeted them with handshakes before leading them inside. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the moments that followed, showing muzzle flashes erupting from the direction of the individual who had greeted them. In the immediate aftermath, the alleged shooter and his associates were seen fleeing the building. The motive for the deadly encounter remains under investigation.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrests of two suspects. Amarii Fontanelle, 19 at the time of the incident, was identified through still images from the surveillance video and was arrested in January 2023. He was later indicted on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder while armed, along with other charges related to the shooting. A second suspect, Jahi Rapp, was also taken into custody in connection with the killings. Fontanelle's legal proceedings have seen him released on home confinement at one point, a decision that was later revoked after reported violations. The case continues to move through the court system, with a trial anticipated as the families of Reginald Cooper Jr. and Davonte Berkley await justice for their profound loss.
