In the Brentwood neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C., on the evening of September 27, 2023, a violent outbreak of gunfire shattered the night, leaving two men dead and three others wounded. One of the men who lost his life was James Cooper Jr., a 46-year-old who was reportedly visiting his mother. The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. in the 2500 block of 14th Street, Northeast.
Responding to reports of a shooting, Fifth District officers arrived to a chaotic scene.
They discovered James Cooper Jr. and another man, 41-year-old Nathaniel Limes of Richmond, Virginia, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Three other adult males were also victims of the shooting; one was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and two others later arrived at area hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
According to his mother, James Cooper Jr. was leaving her home when he was shot. She recalled the horror of seeing her son and another man she had known for years lying on the ground. The investigation into the quintuple shooting is being handled by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. Authorities have indicated they are searching for three suspects who were seen fleeing the area in an SUV. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, with police exploring the possibility of a dispute between two groups.
The Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide in this case, bringing the total possible reward to $50,000. As of now, no arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
