Just days after celebrating his 32nd birthday, Jonathan Pena was fatally shot in the Bronx. On the evening of Saturday, November 13, 2021, Pena was with a 46-year-old friend outside the Marbella Restaurant on Macombs Road in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx. The two men were approached by three individuals who drew guns and proceeded to steal Pena's gold chain.
As Pena and his companion attempted to flee the scene, the assailants opened fire.
Pena was struck in the torso, and his friend was shot in the back. Pena was privately transported to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other victim was taken by EMS to Lincoln Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. The three suspects fled the location, heading northbound on Macombs Road in a black Mercedes-Benz sedan.
Described as the life of the party, Jonathan Pena worked for a moving company and was a married father of two daughters, ages eight and fourteen. His family remembers him as a wonderful man who was always willing to help others.
In the months following the shooting, the New York Police Department released surveillance video and photos of the suspects, asking the public for assistance in identifying them. On January 9, 2022, police arrested 21-year-old Kadeem Edwards, a Bronx resident, in connection with the murder. Edwards was charged with murder and attempted murder for his alleged role in the shooting death of Jonathan Pena and the wounding of the second victim.
