In the summer of 2022, a wave of gun violence in Brooklyn claimed the life of 16-year-old Nayshawn Campbell. On the afternoon of Saturday, June 25th, Nayshawn was found shot in the torso on a street corner in the Brownsville neighborhood. The shooting occurred just after 3:15 p.m. near the Brownsville Houses at the intersection of Sutter Avenue and Osbourne Street. Another report specifies the location as inside the Dr. Green Playground.
Nayshawn, who lived in the Gravesend Houses, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Nayshawn was remembered by his family as a young man with a bright future who hoped to one day become an engineer. He was an avid basketball player and spent much of his time at a local Boys and Girls Club. His mother told reporters that she believed her son, who was reportedly coming from a party with his cousin when the shots were fired, was not the intended target. A community vigil was held to honor his life, where family and friends mourned the loss of a young man they described as a role model to his younger cousins.
The investigation into Nayshawn's death led to a significant crackdown on local street gangs. Authorities identified Nayshawn as an associate of the 'Woo' gang. In May 2024, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced a sweeping 85-count indictment against 18 alleged members of the rival 'H-Block,' 'Billy,' and 'Gates Fam' gangs. Among those charged were three individuals directly implicated in Nayshawn Campbell's murder: Nyshaun Perry, Demetri Jean Jacques, and Isaiah Charles, all alleged members of the H-Block gang. The charges against them included second-degree murder and conspiracy. This major law enforcement action was the result of a long-term investigation into a series of violent incidents, including multiple shootings and another homicide attributed to the indicted gang members.
