Eyon Johnson, a 46-year-old man, was fatally shot on the morning of Thursday, October 27, 2022, in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The shooting occurred just before 9 a.m. inside Miguel's West Indian Restaurant, located at the intersection of Strauss Street and Lott Avenue. Johnson and his 45-year-old co-worker, Damien White, were at the restaurant to do renovation work.
Surveillance footage from the scene showed two individuals, one wearing a gray hoodie and another
in black clothing, approach the restaurant and open fire. The gunmen appeared to have been waiting for Johnson and White, following them into the eatery before shooting them multiple times. Johnson, a resident of Crown Heights, was rushed to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His coworker, Damien White, was taken to Kings County Hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries three days later. Johnson was a married father of two and was remembered by his superintendent as a 'cool guy' and 'a good tenant.'
In the months following the shooting, police made an arrest in the case. In February 2023, authorities apprehended 46-year-old Sawandi Galara of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was subsequently charged with murder and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Investigators identified a second suspect, 36-year-old Ornando Bovell, who they believe participated in the double homicide. As of June 2023, Bovell remained at large. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released by authorities.
