In the early morning hours of March 14, 2018, a horrific scene was discovered in a fourth-floor apartment in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, forever altering the lives of a family. Loyd Drain Jr., a 57-year-old man, was found dead from a gunshot wound inside the residence at the Riverdale Osbourne Towers on Thatford Avenue. The grim discovery was made around 5 a.m.
by Patricia Green, Drain's wife, when she arrived at the apartment to babysit her granddaughter.
What unfolded was a tragic case of a triple murder-suicide perpetrated by Drain's 27-year-old stepson, Terrance Briggs. Investigators believe that a long-simmering family feud between Briggs and his stepfather was the catalyst for the devastating events. Briggs systematically shot and killed three family members before turning the gun on himself.
The victims of this tragedy, in addition to Loyd Drain Jr., were his 16-year-old son, Loyd Drain III, and Briggs' own one-year-old daughter, Laylay Briggs. Loyd Drain Jr. was found in the bathroom of the apartment, while his son, a promising high school student, was discovered in his bedroom. The youngest victim, Laylay, was found in the same room as her father, Terrance Briggs.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene, and there were no signs of forced entry into the apartment. The investigation concluded that Terrance Briggs was the sole perpetrator of the killings and that no arrests would be made as he had taken his own life. The incident left the community in shock and a family shattered by an act of domestic violence that claimed four lives.
