Jose Hernandez, a 24-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot in a Brooklyn apartment building in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 19, 2025. The incident took place in the lobby of 2020 Dorchester Road in the Flatbush neighborhood.
According to police reports, a dispute between Hernandez and another man escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, the other individual allegedly drew a gun and shot Hernandez in the chest.
Officers from the 70th Precinct responded to a 911 call and found Hernandez with a mortal wound. Emergency medical services transported him to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities quickly took a 22-year-old man into custody at the scene for questioning. The individual, identified as Yonathan Guzman, was a resident of the Dorchester Road apartment building. A firearm was also recovered at the location.
Following the initial investigation, police arrested Guzman and charged him with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. A criminal complaint detailed that Guzman was allegedly armed with both a knife and a firearm when he shot Hernandez. At the time of the arrest, authorities stated that there was no apparent relationship between the victim and the suspect. The motive for the deadly confrontation has not been released. The case is expected to proceed through the Brooklyn criminal justice system.
