In the brisk autumn of 2017, the life of 27-year-old Melquain Jatelle Anderson was violently cut short on a Brooklyn street. On the evening of October 25th, while waiting for a bus near the Farragut Houses, a place familiar to him, Anderson was gunned down in a senseless act of violence. The young man, who was a student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice with aspirations of attending law school, was shot multiple times and died from his injuries.
At the time of his death, his girlfriend was pregnant with their child.
The investigation into Anderson's murder revealed a tragic story of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, a victim of a feud he was not directly involved in. Authorities identified 24-year-old Tavon Diaz as the perpetrator. According to reports, Diaz targeted Anderson not out of any personal animosity towards him, but because Anderson was friends with an individual with whom Diaz was having a dispute. In a chilling admission to the police, Diaz stated that Anderson was simply 'collateral damage.'
Approximately a month after the fatal shooting, Tavon Diaz was apprehended by law enforcement. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder for the death of Melquain Anderson. The legal proceedings culminated in Diaz's conviction for the crime. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the tragic and untimely death of a young man with a promising future.
The profound loss of Melquain Jatelle Anderson spurred his mother, Michelle Barnes-Anderson, to become a fierce advocate against gun violence. In honor of her son's ambition to give back to his community, she established the Melquain Jatelle Anderson Foundation. The foundation provides support to families who have been impacted by violence. Furthermore, her tireless efforts, along with the support of local politicians, led to the passage of 'Mel's Law' in October 2023. This legislation allows New York State schools to posthumously award degrees to students who were killed before they could graduate, a poignant tribute to a life full of potential that was tragically extinguished.
