Ancil Blackman, a 39-year-old man, was fatally shot in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday, July 24, 2020. He was on his way home from his job as a building porter when the incident occurred. The shooting took place in the afternoon, around 5:30 p.m., in front of a house on President Street near Rogers Avenue, just steps from his own home. Blackman was shot in the face and was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Initially, no motive was given for his killing.
The investigation into Ancil Blackman's death took a significant turn when police arrested 41-year-old Hason Rink in connection with a different homicide that occurred on July 2, 2020. During his interrogation for the earlier shooting, Rink unexpectedly confessed to killing Blackman. Rink informed investigators that the motive for shooting Blackman was that he had flirted with Rink's girlfriend. The two men had reportedly been involved in a dispute over Rink's companion.
Following his confession, Hason Rink was charged with murder and a weapons offense for the death of Ancil Blackman. This was in addition to the charges he faced for the July 2nd slaying of 20-year-old Deondraye Moore, whom Rink claimed he was paid to kill. Rink was awaiting arraignment in Brooklyn criminal court following his arrest and confession to the two murders.
