In the late afternoon sun of a Sunday in September, tragedy struck in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Near the basketball courts of the John Hancock Playground, 22-year-old Lester Jack was shot in the torso. The incident, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. at the corner of Hancock Street and Spencer Place, also left another man, aged 29, wounded.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Jack was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save
his life. The second victim was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his backside. The news of Jack's death sent ripples of grief through the community and beyond, particularly as it was learned that his mother was an employee at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Then-Borough President Eric Adams issued a statement mourning the loss, describing it as a tragic result of gun violence.
In the weeks that followed, the New York Police Department conducted an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to an arrest in late October. Tyjuan Cassidy, a 39-year-old resident of the nearby Crown Heights neighborhood, was taken into custody. Cassidy was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm in connection with the death of Lester Jack.
