In the late afternoon sun of a Sunday in September, tragedy struck in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Near the basketball courts of the John Hancock Playground, 22-year-old Lester Jack was shot in the torso. The incident, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. at the corner of Hancock Street and Spencer Place, also left another man, aged 29, wounded.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and Jack was rushed to Interfaith Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save his ...
