In the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, a young life was cut short on the night of May 17, 2025. Zanir Childs, an 18-year-old male, was fatally shot in an incident that also left an 18-year-old woman injured. The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. in front of a residence on New Jersey Avenue, across the street from a public school playground.
Childs, a resident of the nearby Boulevard Houses, was remembered by his mother as a devoted son who was passionate about football and
had dreams of playing in college. He was also a caring grandson, having helped care for his paralyzed grandmother for about five years. On the evening of the shooting, Childs was struck in the torso by gunfire. Emergency services responded to a 911 call and transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, where he was pronounced dead. The female victim suffered a gunshot wound to her right arm and was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in stable condition.
In the wake of the shooting, Childs' family and community advocates called for justice and an end to gun violence. His mother, Krystal Childs, tearfully remembered her son at a press conference, highlighting his good heart and the profound loss felt by his family. The community rallied in support of the family, demanding that the perpetrator be brought to justice.
The New York Police Department's investigation led to an arrest in early June. A 17-year-old male, whose name was not released due to his age, was taken into custody and charged with murder, assault, and criminal possession of a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing.
