In the early morning hours of November 28, 2005, a routine traffic stop in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn turned into a fatal encounter for 35-year-old New York City Police Department Detective Dillon Stewart. While on patrol with his partner in an unmarked car, Stewart observed a vehicle run a red light at the intersection of Flatbush and Church Avenues. The driver of the vehicle, which had stolen New Jersey license plates, refused to pull over, initiating a pursuit.
