On a Halloween evening in 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the festive atmosphere in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn, leaving one man dead and a young woman seriously injured. The male victim was Jamel Nicholson, a 29-year-old Black man, who was standing outside the Sheepshead Bay Houses, a public housing complex on Avenue V. The shooting occurred at approximately 5:11 p.m. on October 31st.
When police from the 61st Precinct arrived at the scene, they discovered Nicholson with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and buttocks. A 19-year-old woman who was with him had also been shot in the chest, right knee, and right hip.
Both Nicholson and the teenage girl were rushed to Brookdale University Hospital for treatment. Tragically, Jamel Nicholson was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The 19-year-old woman, identified in some reports as his girlfriend, survived the attack and was listed in stable condition. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the New York Police Department launched an investigation, but no arrests were made at the time, and the shooter or shooters remained at large.
For over two years, the case remained unsolved, another grim statistic in the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence. Then, in February 2025, a major breakthrough was announced by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. As part of a sweeping indictment targeting violent street gangs, 14 alleged members of the affiliated 59 Brims and Bloodhound Brims gangs were charged in a 129-count indictment that included murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy. This extensive investigation, dubbed "Operation Baywatch," was the result of a long-term effort by the NYPD and the District Attorney's office to quell a violent gang war that had been terrorizing the neighborhoods of Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island.
Within this large-scale takedown, two individuals were specifically charged with the murder of Jamel Nicholson. The investigation revealed that Nicholson, an alleged drill rapper, was considered a rival gang member by the suspects. The charges brought against the alleged gang members marked a significant development in a case that had grown cold, finally bringing a measure of justice to the family and loved ones of Jamel Nicholson and signaling a major blow to the organized criminal activity that had led to his untimely death.
