In the borough of Brooklyn, a construction worker's life was cut short on a November evening in 2022. Peter George, a 38-year-old Black man, was on a residential street in East Flatbush when he was fatally shot in the chest. The incident occurred around 7:12 p.m. on November 20th, along East 51st Street near Linden Boulevard. First responders rushed George to Brookdale Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting
revealed a connection to gang-related activities. George's wife, Kaisha, later shared that she had often worried about the company her husband kept and had pleaded with him to stay home out of fear for his safety. Although the couple was living apart at the time of his death, she described him as a loving man who had endured a difficult childhood and was susceptible to outside influences. Their love story began in Grenada and they later married in Brooklyn.
For months, the case remained under investigation, leaving George's family searching for answers. Then, on May 17, 2023, authorities made an arrest in connection with the murder. Dwalen Sawney, a 49-year-old man with no prior criminal record, was taken into custody. Sawney was subsequently charged with murder and weapon possession, bringing a measure of relief to Peter George's grieving loved ones.
