In the closing hours of a December day in Brooklyn, the life of 17-year-old Darius Roache, a Black male, was brought to a violent and tragic end. On the evening of December 30, 2022, gunshots echoed through the stairwell of his apartment building at 2201 Caton Avenue in the Flatbush neighborhood. Responding to a 911 call at approximately 8:55 p.m., officers from the 70th Precinct discovered the young man unconscious and unresponsive.
Darius was found on a stairway landing between the
first and second floors, having sustained a gunshot wound to his back. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and quickly transported him to Kings County Hospital in an effort to save his life. Tragically, their efforts were in vain, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. The motive for the shooting that claimed the teenager's life remains unknown to law enforcement.
In the wake of the shooting, the New York Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal encounter in the stairwell. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, the individual or individuals responsible for Darius Roache's death have not been identified. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the ongoing investigation, leaving a family to mourn and a community to await answers that have yet to come.
