On a tragic Friday evening, June 22, 2018, the life of 21-year-old Tatiana Wells was cut short in a room at the Days Inn on Emmet Street in Charlottesville, Virginia. Responding to a call about a gunshot victim shortly before 8 p.m., Charlottesville Police officers discovered Wells with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to the University of Virginia Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting was filled with
chaos and despair. A witness at the hotel reported hearing an argument followed by gunshots. Soon after, a man emerged from the room and stated that he had accidentally shot his girlfriend. That man, 23-year-old Xavier Grant Murphy, who was the father of Wells' daughter, was taken into custody at the scene. In a state of distress, Murphy reportedly threatened to take his own life, expressing that he was too young to spend the rest of his life in jail for what he claimed was an accident.
Initially, Murphy was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The investigation into the shooting continued, and the case moved through the legal system. In a turn of events aimed at finding a 'reasonable middle ground' and to spare both families the ordeal of a lengthy trial, Murphy later pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and firing a gun in an occupied building. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Murphy and Wells had been arguing before the fatal shot was fired from his 9mm semi-automatic gun, though he maintained that he did not intend to shoot her. As he left the courtroom, Murphy expressed his remorse to Wells' grieving family, mouthing the words 'I'm sorry.'
