In the autumn of 1991, a workplace shooting in Silver Spring, Maryland, claimed the life of 30-year-old Jose Escobar, a male resident of Hyattsville. The violent episode unfolded on the evening of November 13th at the Tischer Auto dealership, located in the 8200 block of Automobile Boulevard, where Escobar was employed as a custodian. He, along with a colleague, Maura Portillo, 39, were both shot during the incident.
While Portillo succumbed to her injuries at the scene, Escobar was
gravely wounded and transported to Suburban Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he passed away from his gunshot wounds on November 21, 1991, just over a week after the attack.
In the immediate aftermath of the double homicide, Montgomery County police initiated an investigation into the slayings. However, at the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and law enforcement had not publicly identified any suspects. The motive for the deadly assault on the two custodians remained unclear as the investigation commenced.
