In the early morning hours of March 22, 2008, a journey home from the store in Baltimore, Maryland, irrevocably altered the course of Antwan William Horton's life. Horton, a 21-year-old Black male, was in the 500 block of North Decker Street when he became the victim of a robbery that took a violent turn. In the course of the crime, he was shot, the bullet inflicting injuries so severe that he was left paralyzed.
For nearly fifteen years, he lived with the devastating consequences of that single act of violence.
The physical toll of the shooting relentlessly shadowed him. On August 25, 2022, at the age of 35, Antwan William Horton succumbed to complications directly stemming from the injuries he sustained in the 2008 shooting. His death, though occurring years after the initial crime, was not seen as a separate tragedy but as the final, delayed outcome of that fateful night.
In the wake of his passing, the wheels of justice, which had seemingly stalled, began to turn once more. On March 8, 2023, a medical examiner officially ruled Horton's death a homicide, legally linking his demise to the long-past shooting. Baltimore police were formally notified of his death on March 10, 2023. Following this determination, the investigation into the 2008 shooting was reclassified as a homicide case. However, the State's Attorney's Office has since closed the case by exception, a designation that can occur for various reasons, including the death of a known suspect. To date, no public announcements have been made regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the shooting of Antwan William Horton.
