In the vibrant Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore, the life of 32-year-old Rodney Steven Beamon Jr. was tragically cut short on December 21, 2018. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Beamon was a man described by friends as outgoing, funny, and the life of the party. This persona was hard-won, as Beamon had survived a previous shooting in his early twenties, an event that profoundly changed his outlook on life and inspired him to cherish it.
On that fateful December evening, Beamon was at
the Blarney Stone Pub on South Broadway. An argument that began inside the bar with another man, later identified as 48-year-old Phillip Stanley West, spilled out onto the street before the two returned inside. It was then that West allegedly drew a handgun and shot Beamon, who later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The incident left the community in shock and his family devastated.
Following the shooting, Phillip Stanley West remained at large for nearly a month before turning himself in to the police in January 2019. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. The legal proceedings that followed were closely watched, particularly after West was initially granted bail and released, a decision that sparked outrage from Beamon's family. In a later hearing in April 2019, West's bail was revoked. The case proceeded to trial, with jury selection commencing in October 2019.
