Richard Evans, a 41-year-old Black man, was shot and killed on the evening of September 11, 2024, in Baltimore’s Western District. The shooting happened at approximately 10:28 p.m. outside the Odyssey Lounge in the 1300 block of North Calhoun Street. A city ShotSpotter system detected 15 gunshots in the area. When officers from the Baltimore Police Department arrived, they found Mr. Evans suffering from numerous life-threatening gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries the same day.
For more than a year, the investigation into Mr. Evans’s death continued. Detectives learned that an off-duty police officer had witnessed two individuals running from the scene of the shooting and getting into a silver Jeep, which then quickly fled the area. On November 11, 2025, police announced a major development in the case with the arrest of 38-year-old Tirrell Evans.
Tirrell Evans was charged with first-degree murder and other related firearm offenses in connection with the shooting. He was ordered to be held without bail. During subsequent court proceedings, prosecutors revealed that Tirrell and Richard Evans, who were not related, had once been “best friends” who grew up together.
The trial against Tirrell Evans began in Baltimore City Circuit Court before Judge Paul Cucuzzella. Opening statements were held on October 19, during which the prosecution alleged that Tirrell Evans shot his former friend in the back multiple times. After several days of testimony, closing arguments were delivered on October 22. As of October 2026, the case had been handed over to the jury for deliberation.
