In the cool evening of October 8, 2014, a gathering of men outside an apartment building in the 2700 block of Lorring Drive in District Heights, Maryland, was shattered by sudden violence. Cortney Deontray Beckham, a 22-year-old African-American male from the same street, was among the group when an argument erupted with a man who had approached them. The verbal altercation quickly escalated when the unidentified man pulled out a gun and opened fire into the crowd.
