In the quiet evening hours of November 13, 2020, tragedy struck in District Heights, Maryland, forever altering the lives of those connected to Martin Jonathan Spicer Sutton. A 40-year-old man from nearby Washington D.C., Sutton was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 2100 block of Brooks Drive. Prince George's County Police officers responded to a report of a shooting shortly before 10 p.m. and discovered Sutton outside.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation by homicide detectives suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence. As they delved deeper into the case, they worked to identify the person or persons responsible and uncover the motive behind the fatal shooting. In early January 2021, a significant breakthrough occurred when Prince George's County Police arrested a suspect in connection with Sutton's death. Troy Hemphill, a 54-year-old resident of Landover, was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Martin Sutton. The investigation revealed that while Hemphill and Sutton were not directly acquainted, they did share mutual acquaintances. According to police, Hemphill confessed to the shooting. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, along with other related charges, and was ordered to be held without bond at the Department of Corrections.
