In the early morning hours of May 19, 2024, the vibrant atmosphere of a car meet in a shopping center parking lot in District Heights, Maryland, was shattered by gunfire. Twenty-six-year-old John Phipps of Waldorf, a male, was found inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Another adult male was also shot during the incident but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
John, affectionately known as 'Panda,' was a beloved figure in the local car community. He was the co-founder of the Hallow Squad Car Club and was known for his warm and kind nature. Those who knew him described him as a 'gentle giant' with an infectious love for life. His passion for cars was more than just a hobby; it was a way to foster a sense of community and belonging for fellow enthusiasts.
The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Their efforts, aided by information from the community, led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Raheem Adams, 22, of Stafford, Virginia, and Caimon Harrell, 21, of Woodbridge, Virginia, were taken into custody.
Both Adams and Harrell have been charged with the murder of John Phipps. The charges against them include first and second-degree murder, as well as attempted first and second-degree murder and other related charges. Harrell was apprehended at his home by the Prince William County Police Department and is awaiting extradition to Prince George's County. The investigation into the motive for the shooting is ongoing. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.
