On March 1, 2022, 31-year-old Jori Brown, of McArthur, Ohio, was tragically found dead at a residence on Frazee Lane in McArthur. The Vinton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 hang-up call and discovered that Jori Brown and 29-year-old Lawrence McMichael had been shot. The investigation revealed that both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, a multi-county search led to the apprehension of two suspects, August Christopher Schuetz and Shania Nicole
Jones. Both were indicted on multiple charges, including Aggravated Murder, Murder, Voluntary Manslaughter, Aggravated Burglary, Felonious Assault, Tampering With Evidence, and Gross Abuse of a Corpse. The charges carried severe penalties, including lengthy prison terms and substantial fines.
In February 2023, Shania Nicole Jones pled guilty to two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Murder in connection with the deaths of Jori Brown and Lawrence McMichael. Jones could face up to 27.5 years in prison, along with other penalties. August Christopher Schuetz’s trial has not yet been scheduled, but he remains held on the Aggravated Murder charges.
The community has expressed outrage over the plea deal and the perceived leniency of the sentences. Both Jori Brown and Lawrence McMichael left behind minor children, family members, and friends who continue to seek justice for their loved ones.
The case remains under investigation, and the legal proceedings are ongoing.
