In the winter of 2018, the life of 18-year-old Abdul Karim Thomas was tragically cut short in Greenbelt, Maryland. On the evening of December 18th, police responded to reports of gunshots in the 9100 block of Edmonston Road. Arriving at the scene, they discovered Thomas inside an apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the location.
Known to his friends and family by the nickname 'Baby Swendle,' Thomas was remembered for his
funny and goofy personality. Those who knew him described him as a caring individual, with one friend recalling that the last thing Thomas said to them was to 'be safe.' His death left a void in the lives of his loved ones, who mourned the loss of a young man who was just on the cusp of adulthood.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect, 17-year-old Tavon Jonathan Barnes of New York City, who had previously resided in Greenbelt. A warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Barnes, and he was subsequently arrested in New York City. Following his arrest, he awaited extradition to face charges in connection with the death of Abdul Karim Thomas.
