In the early hours of a summer morning in Essex, Maryland, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet, leaving a scene of violence that would claim the life of 34-year-old Dennis Christopher Vasquez. On July 27, 2019, just before 12:30 a.m., Baltimore County Police were called to the 1000 block of Foxcroft Lane for reports of a shooting. Arriving officers discovered a chaotic scene with three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Vasquez, a resident of Parkville, was one of two men who
succumbed to their injuries that night. Another victim, 26-year-old Cameron Ross Stenhouse of Essex, was also pronounced dead, while a third individual was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper body but was expected to survive. Investigators quickly determined that the triple shooting occurred during a drug transaction.
Within days of the incident, Baltimore County Police announced the arrest of a suspect. Corey Daniel Powell, 24, of the same block where the shooting occurred, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Vasquez and Stenhouse, as well as one count of attempted first-degree murder for the third victim who was injured. Following his arrest, Powell was ordered to be held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center. The investigation suggested that Powell and Stenhouse were together selling marijuana when Vasquez and his friends arrived to make a purchase, and an altercation ensued which led to the fatal shooting.
